Is Siri dictation the same as Apple Dictation?

Yes. The mic key on your iPhone keyboard starts a feature Apple calls Dictation. Many people call it Siri dictation. It’s what this page compares ToneScribe with.

What actually comes out of each?

Apple Dictation types your words and adds commas, periods, and question marks. It only starts a new paragraph when you say “new paragraph,” and it stops after 30 seconds of silence.

ToneScribe removes filler words, adds paragraph breaks for you, and turns spoken lists, times, and currency into proper text. That cleanup currently works in English.

In our own use, Apple Dictation misses words and runs everything into one paragraph. Apple’s newest dictation model, which improves spelling and punctuation, only runs in English on iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air or later. ToneScribe runs the Parakeet speech model on every iPhone and Mac it supports.

How can I test both myself?

Pick a real message you need to send, at least four sentences long, with a name in it that usually comes out wrong. Dictate it into Apple Dictation, pausing once mid-thought, and count the edits you’d make before sending it.
